Maritime Sectors of Hampton Roads: Offshore Wind Ships

Two of the most impressive ships supporting the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project are the Orion and Charybdis. The Orion is a heavy-lift vessel designed to carry and install wind turbine foundations and towers that weight thousands of tons. The Charybdis is the first U.S flagged offshore wind installation vessel of its kind. ​

Off the coast of Virginia Beach, 27 miles from the shore, 176 offshore wind turbines will transform ocean winds into clean energy. This is the largest offshore wind project in the United States and it will generate enough energy to power up to 660,000 homes. ​

Military Sealift Command (MSC), headquartered in Norfolk, is the powerhouse behind Navy operations around the world. Their mission is to deliver fuel, food, ammo, and supplies to keep the Navy and other military ships mission ready. Wherever the fleet goes, MSC is right there making sure every ship stays in the fight.​

Powering global trade and local opportunity, the Port of Virginia offers careers in crane operation, trucking, logistics, IT, and clean energy. It supports thousands of careers and connects Hampton Roads to the world! ​

The Port of Virginia has become one of the first major East Coast ports to be powered by 100% clean energy. This is part of the bigger initiative to be completely carbon neutral by 2040. ​

From sneakers to smartphones, it probably came through the Port of Virginia, the third-largest container port on the East Coast. With 4 terminals across Hampton Roads and more than 40 international ships arriving every week, this port keeps the global supply chain moving. ​

As one of 20 ship repair yards across the region, Colonna’s Shipyard, the oldest family-owned shipyard in the U.S., still going strong and leading the way in ship repair and steel fabrication.​
